    An introduction to linguistic variation and its social significance, especially the quantitative study of phonological and grammatical features and their correlations with age, gender, ethnicity and other social variables. Includes field methods, quantitative methods for correlating linguistic and social variables and practice in dialect analysis based on data from the speech community.
